The week in review E-mail
Wednesday, 14 May 2008
-There’s a new school resource officer at the Chariho High School and this seems like a good change. By
all accounts, Steven Gravier is a people person and likes working with students. Best of luck to outgoing officer Jeffrey Vaughn but he’s not going far. He will doing detective work for the Richmond Police Department.

-Charlestown did get a quorum on their second try for the financial town assembly and the council voted on Monday to adopt the budget. Next up is the vote on that budget on June 2. We are still waiting on the dates for budget voting for Hopkinton and Richmond.

-Can you believe Jane Goodall was at the Foster Parrots Wildlife Sanctuary in Hopkinton? We can’t either and no one told us about it. Please call us with your news. It may be a long time or never before someone of the likes of Jane Goodall visits Hopkinton again. At at an old chicken processing facility to
boot.

-The Scottish Fest is this weekend and whether or not you are Scottish, the event promises to be a good time. There are lots of events, music and you can even sample haggis.

-An award winning URI physics student resides right in Richmond. In fact his whole family moved to Richmond for the course of his schooling. Now that’s family unity.

-The community meetings in Alton are keeping neighbors informed on cleanup efforts and more importantly are a sign that the cleanup is going forward.

-The feel-good environmental story of the week was the quahog transplant at Ninigret Pond on May 8. And there’s another transplant event coming on May 20 to Quonochontaug Pond. It’s all part of an effort to increase the shellfish in the ponds and improve the water quality. And it’s coupled with eelgrass plantings as well. A win/win.

-While we sometimes have our doubts about scientific models, there is empirical evidence that denitrification systems substantially reduce the amount of nitrogen in wastewater. We don’t think Charlestown should spend $3,000 to further study the issue.  How about working on ways to reduce the financial hardship of these expensive systems.

-As for selling balloons at the Memorial Day Parade – I guess that’s a can of worms judging by Mageau’s reaction -- but we don’t have an objection to it here. The last time we checked this was America.
